Dietary Reference Intakes: Vitamin A Full Description
The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) are reference values that are quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for apparently healthy people. This volume of DRIs includes vitamins A and K, iron, iodine, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, zinc, and other potentially beneficial trace elements in human physiology and health. This volume presents what is known about how these nutrients function in the human body, what the best method is to determine the requirement of these nutrients, which factors may affect how these nutrients are utilized and therefore affect their requirement, and how these nutrients may be related to the prevention of chronic disease. Based on analysis of nutrient metabolism and analysis of data related to nutrient requirements and intakes of humans, recommended intakes for each age group -- from the first days of life through childhood, sexual maturity, midlife, and later years -- are proposed. This volume also identifies Tolerable Upper Intake Levels, which, if consumed consistently, may result in adverse health effects. Dietary Reference Intakes represents a new paradigm for the nutrition community.
